It’s back! You thought you left the pimple days back in your teens. Acne still affects adults and it is known as adult acne. Some women are unlucky and never outgrow acne. Dealing with acne as an adult can be frustrating and can put a crimp on your life. The cause of adult acne is an oily substance called sebum. Sebum is produced by the skin's sebaceous glands. When the oily substance begins to clog your pores, it attracts bacteria and becomes inflamed forming the treacherous pimple.
A lot of times an imbalance of estrogen causes these adult acne breakouts. The imbalanced hormones are usually caused by pregnancy or menopause. So, what do you do? Well, treating adult acne can be tricky. It doesn’t help that most medications are geared to teenager’s oily skin. When picking a cleanser, avoid strong gels and products containing beads or granules. Due to your skin being more sensitive than when you were in high school, the strong and beaded type of products could irritate your skin.
It’s suggested that you should try over-the-counter retinal creams or lotions to clean your pores and help reduce fine wrinkles. When choosing a product, make sure to pay attention to what is in it or how much is in it. You need products with salicylic acid to exfoliate blocked pores and reduce redness, but make sure it’s only 5% or less. With your skin being more sensitive, it can’t take the strong products you once used in your high school days. You also need a product with benzoyl and peroxide to kill bacteria, but use a product with 2% to stop from irritating your skin. By combining these two main ingredients, you get an amazing face wash that clears away the dirt and kills the bacteria. Try to avoid facial scrubs. The scrub will just scratch your skin, giving room for more bacterial growth, which will lead to even more adult acne.
